THE in-depth article by Shirley Mathias (EA, August 2) painting a written portrait of the Rev Derryk Evans was a breath of fresh air and absolutely fascinating.
There are so many facets to this unique and extraordinary personality.
I first encountered Derryk in the 1970s when a group of people, independent in thought, met once a month to exchange views and aspirations. The meetings were always stimulating, uplifting and inspiring.
Derryk's forthright manner and inner strength is a tremendous gift to the tapestry of life.
It takes enormous courage in the stifling ranks of the church to speak out and to dare to offer an alternative view. However, Derryk has always valued and opted for the all too often uncomfortable truth, rather than seeking the empty ploy of popularity.
I would like to say a very sincere and heartfelt thank you to Derryk that he touched my life at a time when I was struggling to come to terms with a personal tragedy.
I am indebted to Derryk that he was there for me with his own very special brand of support, reassurance and universal love.
