CHIPPENHAM boss Tommy Saunders has moved to bring former Southampton teenager Andy Robertson to Hardenhuish and the defender is looking to make an early impact.

Robertson's contract with the Premiership club expired in June and he trained with the Bluebirds last Thursday before being drafted into the squad for Saturday's clash with Hednesford.

"Adie Mings knows David Coles, the goalkeeping coach at Southampton, and basically through that association I came down to Chippenham," said Robertson.

"Mingsy and Tommy are well respected in the game and I came down and trained and found the lads to be a nice group and hopefully it will go from there."

Robertson, who knows new Swindon Town recruit Brian Howard well from his time at St Mary's, was given a chance in the Saints reserves but never broke into the first team.

"They were good at Southampton. If you were good enough you were old enough and I did get a chance in the reserves," he said.

He has been impressed with Chippenham's unbeaten start to the season and hopes to soon be out on the pitch doing his bit to help continue that.

"Chippenham are unbeaten so far and were unlucky against Hednesford after creating a lot of chances. With a bit of luck it will come," added Robertson. "We've got Stafford on Saturday and hopefully can get a draw or a win. We will just take every game as it comes really.

"I don't expect to come in and automatically play. I had a light problem with my ankle during pre-season so I want to come in and get a few training sessions under my belt and look to impress."
