RORY FALLON has accepted the daunting challenge of trying to break up the Sam Parkin-Tommy Mooney partnership as Andy King looks for a serious play-off push.
The 21-year-old signed a two and a half year contract yesterday and believes the move south from Barnsley will allow him to blossom as an all round striker rather than being condemned to life as a 'target man' a label he firmly rejects.
The New Zealand-born forward said: "I want to show people that I can play. I wouldn't have joined a club that just wanted to use me to flick the ball on. I have come to a club with a manager who believes in trying to play good football.
"I am only young and I feel I have a lot more to give and a lot more to learn. Andy King can help push me on.
"At Barnsley I was being used as the target man in a 4-5-1 system but I feel there's more to my game than that.
"I didn't really get the chance to express myself and it was time for a fresh challenge.
"I can climb, flick the ball on and put other people into play but I can also run at people and I've good feet.
"But I don't want to be pigeon-holed as just a target man.
"The prospect of playing with Tommy Mooney or Sam Parkin is exciting and maybe even all three of us up front.
"It's a good young team here with great potential and I can sense a real hunger."
Fallon netted against Town at Oakwell earlier in the season and the visitors' performance that day left a lasting impression with him.
He said: "Swindon played Barnsley off the park in the first half at Oakwell earlier this season and should have had the game won.
"It was good football and that really impressed me.
"I like the gaffer, the ground, the training pitch and the lads so that's got to be a good start.
"All I can promise the fans is that I'll give them all I've got."
Fallon's new boss is delighted to have him on board.
He said: "He is the right age, the right type and falls within the structure that the club can afford.
"Rory provides me with fresh alternatives.
"I can either bring him in for Sam Parkin or Tommy Mooney, neither of whom are 100 per cent fit, or I can go with all three.
"Rory is only young but he has both experience and goals at this level.
"He didn't take much persuading to come here. The challenge is there for the boy with regard to Mooney and Parkin and I have explained that to him.
"Although I told him that Sam and Tommy were first choices, if he proved to me that he could split that partnership up, I'd be nothing but delighted.
"I now have three goalscorers with a presence that can fight for two places or give me the wonderful alternative of playing three upfront if we're chasing the game.
"It's all about progression.
"The fact this club has been able to use a minimal fee to strengthen the squad makes that statement.
"We as a club still believe that there is a very, very good chance of fulfiling the potential we know is there by reaching the play-offs."
