PEOPLE with learning difficulties are soon to benefit from a project to help them buy the help they need after an extra £103,000 of Government funding has been promised.

Swindon People First and Swindon Borough Council Social Services have worked together to get the money over the next 18 months.

SPF is a self advocacy group run by and for people with learning difficulties.

People with learning difficulties can choose to take direct payments, whichthey can use to buy the support they need for themselves, and choose the time and people who deliver the services.

Graham Pearson, Assistant Director of Adult services said: "Swindon People First has been a national front runner in this field for a long time now, and we are really pleased to be working in partnership with them.

"Direct payments are a good way of giving people with learning difficulties more control over their own lives, which is something we are committed to at Swindon Social Services."

Jemima Milton, Lead Member for Social Services was equally enthusiastic: "This is a fantastic scheme which will help to give people with learning difficulties extra independence whilst still getting support from the partnership."
