THE dream of moving unaided for the first time in years is about to come true for paralysed Salisbury woman Rachel Coxon.
Just three weeks after the Journal reported Rachel's plight, generous readers have donated almost £6,000 to help her buy a wheelchair she can control with her chin.
The success of the appeal has amazed the 32-year-old, who can now undergo an assessment to find the chair best suited to her needs.
"It feels within reach," said a delighted Rachel.
"This is an incredible amount of money. I can't believe it has come in so quickly.
"People are so kind - it means so much to me."
Although the exact cost of the chair has yet to be worked out, Rachel's friends and family hope a fundraising party held at the Moloko Bar in Bridge Street, Salisbury, last night will have given her the final boost she needs.
"I am so close - I know it will happen now, thanks to everyone in Salisbury," she said. "All I can say is thank you."
Rachel, of Ashley Road, last walked when she was 15, when she was struck down with a debilitating virus that doctors believe might have been caused by a reaction to an insect bite.
