THE winner of this year's Warminster Civic Award says she will not be letting up in her fundraising efforts.
Gladys Howlett, from Heytesbury, picked up the award for her dedicated work for a number of charities in and around Warminster. Winning the award has made the 75-year-old something of a local celebrity in the village, but she says she is not ready to put her feet up quite yet.
Mrs Howlett has raised funds for the Beckford Centre, which cares for elderly people, for almost 20 years. Her other voluntary work includes running Warminster's MS charity shop every Monday and collecting for the Macmillan Cancer Trust.
She said: "I love what I do and I'm very honoured to think that I have been recognised for this. I just didn't know what to say, I had tears running down my face and I was shaking.
"It was a complete surprise, I never expected anything like that. I am just an ordinary working lady."
Since winning the award, well- wishers have inundated Mrs Howlett with cards and flowers, which she has been delighted with. But her energy shows no signs of fading as she goes about her fundraising.
She said: "I am a very lucky lady. I can still drive a car and I'm very fit."
