A YOUTHFUL Wootton Bassett side treated Painswick to a dose of Gallic flair as they ran out 13-11 winners in Gloucestershire.

Bassett, with eight under 20s in their side, took the lead when Frenchman Flo Vialan finished off an excellent lineout drive by powering over the line from close range.

Duncan Fulling converted for an early seven-point advantage.

Painswick, in confident mood after a 40-point victory last week, responded immediately with a flowing backs move and breached Bassett's defence for an unconverted try in the corner.

But Bassett used their young backs to good effect to force their way back into contention.

They crossed the Painswick line on four occasions but could not convince the referee they had grounded the ball.

And it was Painswick who added to the scoreline as they kicked two penalties and took a four-point lead early in the second half.

But Bassett's backs continued to penetrate and, eventually, the pressure told.

Fulling pulled it back to 11-10 with 10 minutes left and then, deep into injury time, he popped over his third kick to give Bassett a deserved victory.
