Ref. 27794-62SWINDON has been switched on to help save the environment. The Switch on Swindon campaign launched by BBC weatherman Richard Angwin aims to encourage householders to stop wasting fuel.
Richard, who presents the weather for BBC Points West, launched the initiative with a stark message outside the Pilgrim Centre in Regent Street.
Using a giant floor map, he gave a forecast for the year 2050 to highlight the changes that will occur if greenhouse gases continue to build up in the atmosphere.
He said: "Being energy efficient in the home will help cut greenhouse gases which are making the world hotter.
"Extreme floods, droughts, storms and rising sea levels already threaten many plants and animals."
Under the competition, run by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, points will be given to council wards depending how well householders are promoting energy efficiency.
Over the coming year, points will be awarded for organising talks and events about saving energy.
Householders will be encouraged to install loft and cavity wall insulation, draught excluders and low energy light bulbs.
The greenest ward will win £4,000 for a community project.
Environmentally friendly householders will be entered into a draw with a prize of £500.
Ruth Baker, who is helping to run the campaign, said: "This is a chance to come forward and win some money for your community and do your bit to protect the environment." To take part in Switch On Swindon call Ruth on 01793 535476.
