DRIVERS who use their mobile phones while driving face a fine of up to £1,000 when the law changes on December 1.
From today a Government advertising campaign will remind people of the imminent ban on using hand-held mobiles.
Earlier this year police targeted stretches of the M4 motorway around Swindon and found it was commonplace for drivers to make and receive calls while at the wheel of their vehicles.
Under the new offence of using a hand-held phone while driving offenders will have to pay a fixed penalty of £30, which can be increased to a maximum of £1,000 if the matter goes to court.
Drivers of vans, lorries, buss and coaches can be fined up to £2,500.
Road safety campaigners say companies have been exploiting the imminent ban to sell hands-free kits, which they say are just as dangerous as hand-held mobiles.
