WOOTTON Bassett's Under 15s triumphed 22-12 in a close-fought local derby against their Swindon counterparts.

Both sides contributed to an excellent and passionate game and Bassett started the stronger as Swindon struggled with a reorganised team.

Excellent handling from Bassett's forwards and backs pushed Swindon back into their 22 and from a scrum No 8 Chris Moakes picked up and powered over for an early lead.

Swindon''s back row competed aggressively in loose play, led by flanker Phil Cozens, and the steady boot of fly-half Dan Whitmore cleared several dangerous situations for the visitors.

Bassett continued to attack with their forwards dominating the set, and this allowed Bassett fly-half Mike Martin the space to release his backs with centre Jake Sworder eventually cutting through the defence for Bassett's second try.

Bassett's back division then started to move the ball wide but couldn't breach a committed Swindon defence until second row Tom Jenkins' tireless efforts reaped rewards and he scored Bassett's third try early in the second half.

This signalled several substitutions as Bassett brought on fresh legs but the switches seemed to upset their rhythm and Swindon surged into the game with two excellent opportunist tries from winger Jason Wright. He ran in from distance on both occasions, Whitmore converting one of those.

Bassett regrouped, however, and finished the stronger with centre Simon Hutchings going over from short range, Russell Barstow adding the two extra points.

n WOOTTON Bassett Under 12s ran out 42-7 winners at Marlborough.

Playing a competitive game for only the second time this season, Bassett scored early throughTom Mullins and further tries were quickly added through, Gareth Evans, Daniel Norcross, Sam Flint and Tristan Cotterill.

n Chippenham's Under 13 squad won their way through to the final of the Bristol Combination Cup with a 12-0 victory over Cleve.

Chippenham dominated the set piece from the start, but they opened the scoring from broken play when Sam Wells released Luke Flower to outrun the Cleve defence, score under the posts and convert his own try.

Chippenham took a slender 7-0 lead into the break and almost extended it when debutant Ed Whipp just lost control short of the line,

Flower eventually went over for his second try and the only setback for Chippenham came with the sin-binning of James Wright late in the game.
