HUNDREDS of gifts donated by Highworth residents are to be sent to needy children in Eastern Europe.
Around 1,000 shoeboxes filled with gifts and everyday essentials have been collected for Operation Christmas Child.
Co-ordinator Phyllis Reid has been collecting the boxes at Highworth Recreation Centre.
They will now be sent to a warehouse in Melksham, from where the first batch will leave for the city of Odessa in the Ukraine on Saturday.
Aid agencies will distribute the boxes to children between two and 14 years of age in orphanages, children's homes, street shelters and refugee camps.
Each box contains gifts, such as cuddly toys and crayons, as well as toiletries. Donations have come from local schools, churches and community groups.
Phyllis said: "Everybody has been very generous. I'm' sure the gifts will be appreciated."
