A drug addict, who handed himself in to police because he was fed up with being on the run, has been jailed for five months.
Homeless heroin junkie Vincent Montgomery, 42, admitted stealing a bottle of Hugo Boss perfume from the town centre's House of Fraser department store and of breaching a community punishment and rehabilitation order, as well as failing to surrender to police.
Swindon Magistrates were told yesterday that three weeks ago Montgomery, who has been in and out of prison for many years, handed himself in to police.
His solicitor, Rob Ross, told the bench: "He is here today because in many ways he has had enough.
"He could probably have evaded arrest on a warrant for a long as he wanted but he handed himself in.
"He has an entrenched drug problem going back many years, and he realises the only way he is going to do anything about it is to put himself back in custody.
"He is sick and tired of going round and round in the same circle and he knows going back to heroin addiction could kill him."
