CHIPPENHAM ran out winners in an exciting friendly encounter with South West 2 side Thornbury.
Thornbury opened the scoring from a sweeping run coming from deep in their own 22 to score in the corner.
Chippenham welcomed back fly-half, Trevor Lloyd who kicked a penalty in response.
Chippenham's pack was bolstered with the debut of a new South African lock Tian Schutte and he started to take control with some impressive mauling.
Debutant Adam Mings then swept through after Chippenham broke from the centre only to have the ball turned over ten metres out.
Thornbury replied themselves by sweeping forward stretching the home defence wide and scored under the posts.
The conversion was added to give Thornbury a 12-3 lead at the interval.
Chippenham made a change at half-time bringing on another debutant in Fijian number eight Koroi Misimisi.
His powerful running, tackling and strength added to the already dominant pack who began to ruck and maul their way into the opposition's half.
From this pressure veteran scrum-half Tim Dunford forced his way over the line.
Chippenham's backs then really came to life and began to contain their opposite numbers.
A good move saw winger Darren McMillan break down the right, step inside and score under the posts with Lloyd adding the conversion.
A line-out from 15 metres was won and eventually the ball was driven to the try line where prop Graham Treen touched down in the corner for his third try of the season.
First team manager Robbie Spiers said; "This was our fifth win on the trot and a great game of rugby.
"We had five debutants playing today who showed that they can add something to the 1st XV squad.
"This will make the current players sit up and think and that can only be good. The spirit amongst the players is fantastic and we are looking forward to next week's game."
Chippenham 2nd XV 53, Salisbury 2nd XV 26
Chippenham's 2nd XV played host to local neighbours Salisbury in the Bristol Combination Cup on Saturday.
Salisbury were the first to put points on the board opening the scoring in the first five minutes.
Chippenham soon answered with Paul Clifford breaking through the Salisbury defence to release prop Dave Williams who crashed over the line from five metres. Clifford added the conversion.
Clifford then added a try after a catch and drive from a lineout to score under the posts. He kicked the conversion to make it 14-7 to Chippenham.
More points followed from Clifford as he went over for another try and kicked a penalty after Salisbury were caught offside at a maul following a Chippenham back row move.
Chippenham led 22-7 at half-time but Salisbury hit back after the break with an unconverted try.
However, Chippenham hit back when Neil Watkins popped up in the centre to go over the Salisbury line and Clifford again kicked the conversion.
Williams then grabbed his second try of the match after a driving maul which was converted by Clifford.
Watkins then got his second with a superb individual try from 30 metres out converted by Clifford.
Dave Burrow then broke through releasing Clifford who passed to Paul Arrowsmith who went over the Salisbury try line to score.
Chippenham's last try of the match came from Ryan Surry.
With the score at 53 - 12 Chippenham eased off and allowed Salisbury to score two converted tries in the last quarter of the match.
Second team coach Tony Audis said: "It was our forwards laying down the foundations for this match that gave us the match.
"Captain Phil Coope especially was at the fore of a great team effort. A good win for us which puts us into the next round."
Chippenham 3rd XV 19, Old Culverhasians 25
Chippenham's 3rd XV started the match slowly and paid the price against Old Culverhasians at Allington Field on Saturday.
Chippenham made early mistakes and conceded a converted try within the first five minutes.
Finding themselves 7-0 behind very quickly Chippenham were shocked into action and put together a number of moves between forwards and backs.
They should have got back onto level terms only for the final pass let them down.
Another mistake from the home side saw them concede another three points to give Old Culverhasians a 10-0 lead after just 20 minutes.
But a mistake by the Old Culverhasians scrum-half enabled the ball to fed to the backs and a chip from Mark Durham was collected by Chris Mooney who went over for Chippenham's first try.
Gordon Hardie kicked the conversion to make the score 10-7 to Old Culverhasians.
The visitors retaliated by putting together a quick move to score another try to give them a 17-7 lead at half-time.
Chippenham started the second half strongly and applied some strong pressure.
A penalty was awarded ten yards from the Old Culverhasians line and as Chippenham needed the points a quick scrum was taken. The ball was fed out to Ben Chamberlain who went over.
But just when Chippenham thought they were back in the game they conceded a try and penalty to leave them trailing 25-12 with ten minutes left.
The final move of the game saw a big push by Chippenham's forwards allow Mike Wheeler to score his first try of the season with Alun Jones converting.
