Mark Few has been jailed for six years after a court heard how he brutally raped a woman in her own home.

His victim was found half naked, battered and bruised wandering around Devizes town centre after the two-hour attack.

Few, 30, has plagued Devizes with his continual offending and drunken behaviour, the court heard.

Mark Worsley, prosecuting, said Few was on bail for assaulting a policeman after a racist attack in a curry house when he raped the woman on August 9.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found in the town centre with her top round her waist and without shoes following the attack.

Mr Worsley told Swindon Crown Court that the woman was abused both physically and verbally in the lead up to the rape.

Few head butted her and dragged her across the floor, causing carpet burns, before tieing her up in her bedroom.

She freed herself from the bonds but Few pinned her down on the sofa and raped her, said Mr Worsley.

Following the attack the woman managed to get away and tried to run out of the house with Few in pursuit.

Mr Worsley said: "She ran towards the front door and he followed and grabbed at her.

"It seems she was saved by the front door slamming shut. He turned to kick it to keep it open and she managed to get to the main road and fled to the home of an acquaintance."

She was stopped by passers-by who asked her if she was all right but in shock she told them to leave her alone.

After telling her friend what had happened the police were called and a passing patrol spotted the distressed, semi-naked victim in the street.

The defendant was arrested the following day after a short chase.

Mr Worsley said weeks before the rape Few had gone to Deeders restaurant on Sidmouth Street even though he was banned from the curry house.

After being asked to leave, Few and a female companion started shouting racist abuse and throwing crockery, cutlery and ash trays onto the floor and at staff.

When Few was arrested he was aggressive and spat bloody spittle into the eye of a police officer. The court heard that the constable had to undergo blood tests after the incident.

At previous hearings Few, of Snuff Street, admitted rape, racially aggravated criminal damage, racially aggravated common assault, assaulting a police officer and perverting the course of justice.

Michael Butt, defending, said that his client had a background of heavy excessive drinking at times bordering on alcoholism coupled with drug abuse.

But the fact that his client had not sought to deny the offences showed real and genuine remorse.

It had also spared the victim the trauma of going to court and reliving her experience.

Judge Tom Longbotham said Few had appeared before courts on a number of occasions for 31 offences.

He sentenced him to five years for the rape with a further year to be served consecutively for the racially aggravated charges.

He was also sentenced to three months for each of the remaining charges, to be served concurrently.

Few must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

DC Marcus Tawn of Devizes CID welcomed the prison sentence.

He said: "This sentence reflects the serious nature of these offences and has highlighted that they will not be tolerated throughout the Wiltshire policing area."
