Supermum Janet Shores and her daughter Susannah Shores. DA4354A MOTHER whose courage and determination has been an inspiration to her family and friends is the proud winner of the October Southern Electric/Journal Supermum competition.

In 1991, Janet Shores was struck down by a debilitating stroke that paralysed the right side of her body and left her almost unable to speak.

She spent four anxious months in hospital, not able to walk and unsure of her future. But Janet was not ready to give up.

The 68-year-old Supermum, of Woodfalls, started on an intensive rehabilitation programme, gradually regaining her speech and learning to write with her left hand.

With the help of physiotherapy, Janet endeavoured to walk unaided and she is even able to drive a car, despite not being able to move her right arm.

Watching her mother's amazing progress with admiration was Janet's daughter, Susannah, who nominated her for the contest.

"She is just terrific," she said. "She is an inspiration to all of us and I think she deserves to be recognised."

Janet hopes winning the award will raise the profile of the Salisbury Stroke Club, which offers companionship and support to sufferers.

"Strokes can affect anyone at any time - I hadn't ever thought about it before I had mine," she said.

"When you leave the hospital, you are very much on your own and, although I have a wonderful family, some people aren't that lucky.

A small team of dedicated volunteers runs the Milford Manor-based club, picking up members and organising activities, but they desperately need more support.

"The club is so important," said Janet, "it would be terrible if it had to close.

"Just a couple more volunteers would make all the difference."

Janet enjoys keeping busy and is involved with the Women's Institute and Downton Transport Link, as well as being a keen cook and gardener.

In 1998, she travelled alone to Seattle and she loves looking after her four-year-old grandson, Louis.

"I am one of the lucky ones," she said. "I can carry on, so I do.

"There is life after a stroke but it will be a different life."
