PRIMARY school teachers across Swindon will decide from today whether or not to boycott exams.

The secretary of the Swindon branch of the National Union of Teachers, Ian Hill, has advised his members to vote in favour of the boycott of Statutory Assessment Tests for children aged seven to 11.

The NUT has stressed that if the ballot is successful teachers will not be on strike and no children will be sent home or miss lessons. Instead, it will mean teachers withdraw from the preparation, administration and marking of SATs.

The ballot is a result of concerns raised by teachers who feel the tests constrain their teaching.

Mr Hill said: "I support my members and it is their choice how to vote but my view is that SATs are not a good way of spending teachers' and children's time."

The tests are due to be taken by pupils in the spring.
