POLICE are treating the assault on a 16-year-old girl in the centre of Devizes on Friday night.as a gay hate attack.
The girl, who is not being named, was set upon by a gang of up to 11 women at about 9.45pm in Estcourt Street, near to the Rising Sun pub.
She was punched in the face and slammed against a wall and left with bruising and suspected concussion.
Sgt Guy Williams of Devizes police said: "Because of comments made at the time in relation to the injured party being openly homosexual, we are treating this incident as homophobic.
"We have spoken to a number of people with regard to this incident but we would urge anyone who witnessed it to come forward."
