WILLAND returned to Devon with the three points after coming out on top in what could be the most open game seen at Bremhill View this season.

The visitors' front two of Phil Everett and Steve Edby are a menacing partnership but Calne's poor defending made it too easy for the pair.

Calne manager Kelvin Highmore said: "They had two good lads up front but we gave them three goals.

"Our defending was awful from front to the back. We talked about their forwards and said we had to cut their service down.

"But we made fundamental errors at the back."

Highmore felt his team looked good going forward but they shot themselves in the foot by conceding three first half goals.

"Going forward we were looking really good. Ben Highmore's link-up play was superb and he had the game of his life.

"But once we lost the ball we were terrible. We got away with two blind back headers twice but the third time Everett read it and toe poked the ball in.

"We didn't learn our lesson and hit a stupid patch pretty much every 15 minutes."

The manager was happier with his side's second half performance but it came too late to save the game.

"I don't get annoyed often but I felt they let themselves down. There were some choice words said at half time but in the second half they responded well. We battered them and couldn't score."

Willand started with former non-league player of the year Phil Everett up front alongside strike partner Steve Edby and the pair gave Calne a torrid opening half.

After Edby had passed up two openings Everett chased down a long kick out from goalkeeper Brian Cann and poked Willand in front from 20 yards in the 15th minute.

Then on 28 minutes Willand capitalised on a disputed corner when Edby chipped the ball to the edge of the box for James Parker to bury a peach of a volley.

Calne responded well and took a real grip on the game and on 33 minutes Ben Highmore was put into space by a James Lye through ball and fired Calne back into the game from 15 yards.

The home team continued to press but suffered a setback on the stroke of half-time when Willand broke from their box and won a free kick 18 yards out from which Edby headed home.

The second half began with Everett heading an Edby cross just wide before Calne really went all out, in a bid to get back into the game.

Ben Moore volleyed over from eight yards and Highmore's overhead kick flew just over. But with ten minutes remaining Calne knew it was not to be their day when Glenn Armstrong's corner kick fell to Lye and his 18-yard volley was blocked on the line.

Matt Pratley hammered in the loose ball only to see his shot blocked by another defender on the line before Highmore's shot flew into the arms of a relieved goalkeeper.
