VANDALS have gone on a wrecking spree on the site of an extension being built at St Dunstan's School, Calne.
Staff and workmen arrived at the school to find a catalogue of damage had been carried out overnight.
The windows of a mobile building used by the builders had been smashed and the window of one digger and the headlight of another had been broken, causing damage running into several hundred pounds.
Despite the setback, the school is still hoping that the extension, which joins the former St Dunstan Junior School and Guthrie Infants' School, will be open by Easter.
St Dunstan's Primary School was formed from the two schools and the work creates a common entrance to the new school, together with a staff room.
WPC Rachel Jennings of Calne Police said that the intruders had apparently broken through the fence surrounding the site.
She said: "They'd basically had a field day, roaming around and breaking things.
Headteacher Mary Smith, said: "It's really sad, when work is going so well, for something like this to happen.
"The children are so looking forward to their new building and not having to get cold and wet walking between the two buildings."
But she said that, thanks to the builders' hard work, work was back on schedule for completion next Easter.
WPC Jennings appealed for the public's help in tracing the vandals who broke in on November 9.
"I would be very interested to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone hanging around the site, or who knows who is responsible for this act," she said.
WPC Jennings can be contacted at Calne Police station on (01249) 812106.
