A man who burgled the home of his former girlfriend's parents has been told by magistrates that he could be sent to prison.

Luke Coleman, of Eastleigh Road, Devizes, admitted burglary when he appeared at Kennet Magistrates Court, Devizes, on November 11.

The court heard he carried out the burglary with another man, George Preston, 19, who has already been sentenced.

Coleman, 18, knew where the back door key to the house in Commercial Road, Devizes was kept and he and Preston used it to enter at night while the owner John Webb and his wife were asleep upstairs.

After hearing how the burglary had had a traumatic effect on Mr and Mrs Webb, the magistrates decided to adjourn the case for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and warned Coleman that custody was an option.

Rachael Hume, prosecuting, told the court that Coleman and Preston stole a television, video recorder, DVD player and other items totalling £922.97.

They did not disturb Mr and Mrs Webb and left the house through the front door which they unlocked with another key.

Mr Webb's nephew Kevin Cooper discovered that Preston was involved and recovered most of the stolen items for the Webbs.

Mrs Hume said: "Mr Webb says he and his wife have had a lot of sleepless nights since the burglary and they feel totally insecure in their home.

"They say it has turned their lives completely upside down and they cannot relax in their own home."

Mrs Hume urged the magistrates to send the case to the crown court for sentencing.

She said the burglary was a breach of trust by Coleman, who before this had no previous convictions or cautions.

But magistrates decided against sending the case to the crown court and adjourned it to December 15. Sentencing will be at Andover Magistrates Court.

Coleman was released on unconditional bail.

Preston, of Grant Road, Enford, received a two year community rehabilitation order for his part in the burglary at Salisbury Crown Court in August.
