DEVIZES won their second cup tie in the space of three days as Dawlish proved no match for them in the Les Phillips Cup.

The home side were only 1-0 in front at half-time and league strugglers Dawlish did pull the score back to 2-1 early in the second half.

But Devizes finished strongly to run out comfortable winners and seal their place in the draw for the next round.

Manager Dave Hopkins said: "It was a good performance. Kev Bush was back from university and we are steady at the back when he's around.

"Steve Campbell was fresh after a two-week rest. Nathan Perkins was excellent and Marcus Wallen and Simon Drewitt did well up front in Justin Lisle's absence."

Devizes, fielding a virtually full strength team, took the lead in the first half when Andy Coombes crossed to the back post for Simon Drewitt to head home.

At half-time Hopkins urged Steve Campbell to hit more balls over the top to Wallen.

Within the first minute of the second half one such ball earned Devizes a corner and from the set piece Bush powered in their second.

Devizes sat back a little then and they were punished when a long ball over top was not dealt with well and the Dawlish forward scored a superb lob from 25 yards.

But the home side immediately hit back and five minutes later Hopkins teed up Drewitt whose shot was saved but Steve Campbell scored from the rebound.

It was all over then but Devizes continued to push forward and the fourth goal again came from Steve Campbell when he thumped a shot into the bottom corner of the net from another corner kick.

The final goal of the game was the pick of the bunch and a one touch 15 pass move was rounded off with a good finish from Drewitt.

Hopkins added: "I was very happy with the performance and was encouraged by some good passages of football we played."

He now hopes his side can carry their confidence and good form into Saturday's mouth-watering clash at Westbury United in the second round of the FA Vase.

"It will be a good game," added Hopkins. "Westbury have done really well and Graham had got a good side there with a blend of experience and youth.

"They have a little bit of money and have played well this year. They ground out an excellent draw with Salisbury and have a lot of strong characters in their side.

"If we aren't at 100 per cent they will win. We don't have as much money behind us but we will fight hard for a result." He continued: "It won't be easy but I feel we have three or four class players who could swing it for us.

"Whatever the result it's great for either club because of the prize money for getting into the next round.

"We made the quarter finals last year and it would be great for the club to repeat that."

Meanwhile, the Devizes' committee has given Hopkins the good news that there is some money available to sign a new striker.
