POLICE in Bradford on Avon have joined other groups in the town by using only fairtrade products at the new police station.

Bradford was named the first 'fairtrade town' in Wiltshire after many shops and businesses in the town opted to sell fairtrade products.

Products carrying a fairtrade mark promise a minimum level of profit for overseas growers exporting products to Britain.

PC Gary Jones said: "I have been buying fairtrade products for a while now and thought it would be a good idea to promote them through an organisation like the police.

"I put the idea to my colleagues at the station and they agreed and now we only drink fairtrade tea and coffee and use fairtrade sugar.

"Some people say you notice the difference but none of us have and although it is a bit more expensive we are not having to contribute any more to our tea fund at the station so we do not notice it."

Fairtrade campaigner Rowena Quantrill said: "This is really good news and shows that fairtrade is reaching all parts of the community."
