REGARDING the tragic death seven years ago of Michael Davies in a road accident at the junction of Hill Street and River Way, as an eyewitness of that dreadful event I should like to make the following comments.
River Way leads to an industrial area and consequently carries a great deal of commercial traffic, with some heavy vehicles. In my opinion crossing River Way at a point close to its junction with Hill Street, as children and others do daily, is extremely hazardous.
It is worth mentioning that Michael's accident actually occurred in River Way, just off Hill Street, rather than in Hill Street itself. It therefore seems to me that steps should be taken to prevent the crossing of River Way near to its junction with Hill Street.
I feel that a good solution would be the provision of a pedestrian crossing in River Way, at the regulation distance from its junction with Hill Street. This however would have to be combined with the provision of railings spanning the distance between the junction and the crossing to ensure that the crossing was used.
The resulting small detour which would result from such an arrangement might be irksome to some but surely would be worth tolerating to prevent a recurrence of the awful event of seven years ago.
I hope this will be seen by the traffic department and due consideration will be given to my suggestion.
