THERE has been a late rush of applicants for the Chippenham Town manager's job after Chairman Malcolm Lyus revealed he is hoping to appoint early next week.

Lyus had been reported as saying Chippenham could have a new manager by the weekend but events in the last few days mean Bluebird fans will have to wait a few more days before they know who will take charge.

Lyus admitted yesterday he had received a number of calls from prospective managers showing an interest in the job and he said the interviews could go on until at least Monday.

"There has been a lot more interest," he said. "By saying the deadline is November 21 a lot more candidates have been fleshed out."

The closing date for applications is today and Lyus admits he will have plenty to think about over the weekend.

Yesterday there had been 32 applicants and seven of these have been interviewed although the Chippenham chairman has said the interviewing is still going on.

Lyus said: "A range of managers have applied for the job and we need to sit down and discuss exactly what it is we want.

"Applications have ranged from some at the top end of the market to others who are known around the area.

"It is an important decision so we will not be rushed but we are hoping to appoint as early as possible next week."

l FORMER Salisbury City manager Geoff Butler has confirmed he has been interviewed for the job.

Butler had his interview on Monday night and was one of the first applicants to be grilled by Lyus.

It is a now a matter of sitting tight and waiting for news.

He said: "I think it went well and I said everything that I wanted to. Obviously I don't know which way it is going to go. It is up to Malcolm Lyus now."

Other people who are thought to have been interviewed already include former Swindon Town striker Steve White and Paulton Rovers manager Darren Perrin.
