THERE seem to be many misconceptions about the effectiveness of speed cameras. The Wiltshire and Swindon Road Safety Partnership facts just do not make sense.
The facts are, the top three most dangerous roads in the UK do not have any speed cameras on them.
The drivers who cause most accidents are male 17-18-year-olds, yet it is the 45-55-year-olds who get the most speeding fines.
The 45-55 age group are actually one of the safest. Ninety per cent of accidents are caused by driver error not speed.
Also very worrying is the fact that speed cameras are taking the place of traffic cops, so dangerous drivers are not getting caught. This means someone tailgating on the motorway does not get caught, whereas someone driving perfectly safely at 80mph would get caught by a camera.
We need to go back to sensible policing of our roads and get away from ineffective speed cameras. As a motorist it is obvious to me and most motorists that speed cameras are just a way to boost income for the police.
