A WEST Swindon schoolgirl has won a competition for her poster highlighting the hazards of the home.
Ten-year-old Beth Gibson, of Old Shaw Lane, was stunned when her A4 design was picked as the winner in her age group for the south west area.
The Brookfield Primary School pupil, who attended an awards ceremony in Leicester, said helping look after her two-year-old sister Grace had made her aware of safety issues in the home.
"We had to draw a poster for children saying about lots of dangerous things you could get in a house and the stuff you should stay away from," said Beth.
"It's quite important to know and there's lots of stuff you could have at home that you didn't realise could hurt you."
Beth's poster, which she drew then coloured in with felt tipped pens, depicted a kitchen scene with a baby crawling across the floor surrounded by all kinds of potential hazards.
Entitled Better Safe Than Sorry, her design revealed the need for care to be taken when storing items such as bleach, aspirin, cleaning products, alcohol and tobacco.
A spokesman for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, which organised the competition, said: "The number and quality of entries was very impressive."
"It was evident a lot of thought and effort had been put into the hundreds of posters submitted by the children, who were all aged between seven and 16."
