SWINDON Supermarine moved ahead of rivals Cirencester in the Dr Martens Western Division after a superb 1-0 home win over title hopefuls Bromsgrove.
The victory pushed Marine back into the crucial top eight the probable cut off point for next season's new look Premier Division.
The last time the two sides met, Ray Baverstock's side were in a less healthy position and only a 3-1 win at Bromsgrove on the final day of last season spared Marine the drop.
There was less at stake at Hunts Copse on Saturday, but the hosts repeated the trick thanks to Sean Terry's first-half goal.
Marine were good value for the lead at half-time, as Jimmy Carter headed Simon Futcher's cross wide.
Top scorer Justin Miller also had chances to open the scoring but failed to trouble Paul Wyatt in the Bromsgrove goal.
The breakthrough arrived two minutes before the interval when Wyatt slipped as he prepared to cut out another Futcher cross and Terry was left to roll the ball into an unguarded net.
Bromsgrove, who had thumped title rivals Rugby 5-1 in their previous outing, enjoyed more of the play after the interval but were unable to find a way past the impressive Tom King in goal.
When Steve Pope eventually did beat the Marine keeper, his header struck a post and bounced to safety.
At the other end, Miller shot wide and Barrie Matthews had a goal ruled out for offside.
Satisfied Marine boss Baverstock said: "Having seen Bromsgrove's result against Rugby last week when they won 5-1, I was a bit concerned before the game.
"But we played well, particularly in the first half and we should have been two or three up by half-time.
"Bromsgrove put us under a bit of pressure in the second half but we deserved to win."
