Teacher Ben Venables has been awarded a gold Duke of Edinburgh Award from Prince Philip.

Mr Venables, who is in his first year of teaching PE at Hardenhuish School, Chippenham, received his award at St James' Palace, London.

Mr Venables said the Duke was very friendly.

"I was impressed that he did not rush and took the time to talk to many of us."

Mr Venables completed his bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards while a student at Ivybridge Community College in Devon.

The scheme has taken him to different parts of Europe, including a trip to Lithuania and an expedition in Ireland.

"I have met some great people and have had a lot of fun," he said.

"My advice for anyone thinking about getting involved in the scheme is to go for it."

Hardenhuish School runs the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award for Year 10 students who may then choose to continue with the other awards. This year 12 students gained bronze and 13 students gained silver.

To earn the awards students have to spend time working on a service, a skill and a sport.
