AFTER the public toilets at Cross Hayes in Malmesbury were voted bottom of the pile in the UK there has been movement to build new automatic loos.
A committee set up to explore the issue has decided that a self cleaning toilet should be set up at Cross Hayes and another at Station Yard car park.
The present loos were voted among the worst in Britain by a panel of judges on the BBC TV programme Britain's Worst..., broadcast earlier this year.
Plans to redevelop the town hall in Autumn next year will see the adjoining public conveniences destroyed and ways to replace and improve the service have been discussed.
District councillor John Thomson, a member of the group charged with finding a solution, proposed automatic toilets as the best option because they were more flexible and more likely to be cleaned.
He said the district council currently pays out £17,000 for maintenance of the present loos. New automatic toilets would cost £23,000 each and an estimated £3,500 would be raised from charging users 20p.
