A SURGEON trained in Swindon fled a hospital because the people who met him were not important enough, a tribunal heard yesterday.
Consultant anaesthetist Ahmed Sharif is before the General Medical Council's professional conduct committee in London accused of vanishing from West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds on April 17, forcing scores of operations to be cancelled.
He was due to work there for six weeks earlier this year. Dr Sharif, 63, who is back in Kuwait where he has spent most of his working life, wrote to the hospital to apologise for leaving and said his room was too small.
The accommodation was free for his time in Suffolk but Dr Sharif said it was like a prison cell. He was also upset he had not been greeted by senior staff, said Lydia Barnfather for the GMC.
Dr Sharif faces being struck off if found guilty of serious professional misconduct.
