NOW that the scaffolding has been taken down from the tearooms in St John's Street, Devizes, attention may be drawn to the faded notice on the wall which, with an arrow, directs visitors round the corner into St John's Alley, described thereon as 15th century dwellings.
These dwellings carry a blue plaque giving their date as "c1550".
I don't doubt that the blue plaque is correct, so when the sign comes to be repainted may it also be corrected to read 16th century dwellings. Tourists will cease to smirk.
