Visitors to Great Chalfield Manor had a surprise in store this week. Instead of the usual sights of magpies and blackbirds, the feathered friends they were watching turned out to be the colourful Trowbridge Operatic getting into the swing of a photocall for its latest production, Honk!
Ducklings, geese and moorhens all feature in the Operatic's latest production at The Arc, which is based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Ugly Duckling.
Ugly, spurned by all but his mother, is lured away by the cat, who smells culinary potential in the baffled bird. By inviting Ugly home for lunch, where he is planning on turning him into duck a l'orange, the cat's antics and his rendition of his signature song Play with your Food, will delight audiences of all ages.
Ugly becomes hopelessly lost and travels through some musical adventures and encounters lots of zany characters on the road to discovering his destiny.
There is a lot of laughter in this production, with Ugly's mum Ida getting the best of the lines, especially when it comes to describing the antics of her errant husband, Drake.
A fairy tale this may be, but it is jam packed with big musical numbers a chorus of croaking frogs and a squadron of ragtag geese.
Honk! won Best New Musical in 2000, beating The Lion King to the award.
Tickets for the show are available from the Arc Theatre on (01225) 756376 or the Tourist Information office at £9 and £4 children under 16. The show is running from December 1-6, with a matinee on December 6.
