DANGERS on school trips are being highlighted in a new safety website launched on Monday. Wiltshire County Council is one of the first local authorities to offer extra help and guidance to schoolchildren embarking on off-site activities.
Safety procedures have already been tightened since schools were required to set up educational visit co-ordinators last year.
Bob Wolfson, director of education and libraries, said: "There is widespread recognition that the children and young people gain enormously from taking part in school trips and longer visits.
"However, it is absolutely essential that all possible steps are taken to ensure the pupils' safety and wellbeing on such trips, and this will help us all to do so."
The website has been developed by the county council working with insurance and risk consultants. Aimed at schools, it is also designed to help council youth development workers assess risks involved in off-site activities.
The website is launched on Monday and for details log on to www.BESTbesafe.com.
