A HOARD of ancient Roman coins dug up by two Warminster treasure hunters has been declared treasure trove.
Richard Boyd and Wayne Green, from Bishopstrow, discovered the coins in February when they were using metal detectors in a ploughed field in Longbridge Deverill. The hoard contains 902 coins, which experts believe could have been the piggy bank savings of a Roman soldier or citizen.
British Museum coin expert Richard Abdy told a Salisbury treasure inquest on Friday each of the coins would at one time have represented a day's pay. But rampant inflation around AD 330 to 340 when they were in use would have reduced their buying power.
Mr Abdy said their value would have been significant, but not a fortune.
