ANDY NICHOLAS has been heralded as 'a massive plus' by his manager and the young Liverpudlian is eager to help Town successfully storm fortress Hartlepool today.
Matty Heywood's suspension opens the door for either Nicholas or Alan Reeves to play alongside Jerel Ifil and Andy Gurney with the 'pupil' favourite to edge out his mentor.
Nicholas' elevation to the first team has been aided by some glowing comments from reserve team manager Reeves.
This followed some sterling second string performances and the irony of possibly edging out his mentor is not lost on the youngster.
Nicholas said: "The gaffer had a chat with me recently and told me he had no qualms about putting me in the team and that he was confident in my ability.
"That was great to hear, especially as he didn't know too much about me when he signed me.
"I was a bit wary about playing as part of a back three initially, but I've really enjoyed it."
Not bad for a player who can count on one hand the number of times he's played as a central defender.
He said: "To be honest, I try not to analyse things too much.
"If I thought about how far I've come in a short time and made a big deal about playing in front of 10,000 people then it might hinder me.
"I prefer to just get out there, apply myself and try and contribute to a good team performance.
"If the gaffer decides to pick Reevesy ahead of me then I'm not about to start complaining. I've still a lot to learn.
"Whether picked or not, Hartlepool will be a really tough game. They've done well since getting promoted last season but we
have the players to go there and get a result."
Although King will not rush into a selection decision, he said: "I am very happy to have a situation where I have choices.
"In Nicholas' case, there is no doubt the young boy has been a massive plus.
"He came to this club with only a few reserve games under his belt but he has worked hard, seized his chance and has pushed himself to the forefront of my mind.
"However, I also know that Alan Reeves, who has been tremendously supportive of Nicholas, could be an important figure at Hartlepool due to his great experience."
King knows his side will need to be at their best to come away with a result.
He said: "They are a well-organised, solid side that don't give much away at home. The fact they have conceded just four goals at Victoria Park tells its own story.
"If we can produce the sort form we showed at Oldham and in the first half against Queens Park Rangers, I feel confident about our chances.
"Obviously, it's a trip into the unknown for most of us. I've never been there and I don't imagine many of the lads have either. That's not a major worry though."
