Ref. 27995-17It's that time of year again - when the team at radio station GWR FM gear up for a day of charity auctioneering in aid of good causes. KEVIN SHOESMITH reports on what Swindon businesses are doing to make the appeal a success.

Businesses in Swindon are being asked to make a real difference to the local community by supporting GWR FM's annual Christmas appeal.

Preparations are almost complete for the radio station's 21st festive fundraiser.

Jackie Kent, the appeal's community trust manager, said: "This is every business's opportunity to make a real difference in the community where their customers and staff live and work, and at the same time raising their company's profile."

It isn't too late for firms to get involved. The appeal takes place this Sunday and the station will be working around the clock to make it happen.

Jackie said: "We're really excited about the support and we're confident that it will be the best ever."

The Evening Advertiser has teamed up with the radio station to lend its corporate support, sponsoring part of the mammoth show.

James Trudgian, the Advertiser's marketing, sales and digital media manager: "We are delighted to be working with GWR FM.

"It's great that the two forms of media can work together to help change the lives of hundreds of people in Swindon."

As in previous years, listeners will be able to bid for a range of prizes, some of which money cannot buy.

Previous prizes have included manic supermarket dashes as well as balloon trips with explorer David Hempleman-Adams.

All proceeds will go to the GWR FM Community Trust, which will be shared out to good causes across the town.

The festive appeal has certainly come a long way since it was launched in 1982 under the station's old name, Wiltshire Radio.

Since then around £2.2 million has been raised, helping more than 11,000 worthwhile causes.

Ralph Bernard, executive chairman of GWR Radio Services, praised generous Swindonians and businesses for their unwavering support. He said: "It's been an incredible experience producing the appeals for so many years.

"Although GWR these days is a major national company with radio stations all over the country I have always said that Wiltshire is home to the greatest listening audience of all.

"Year after year our listeners in Swindon and Wiltshire have proved themselves to be the most generous in the country, and the people and companies who regularly donate their products or services have been magnificent supporters."

Last year 117 grants were awarded, totalling £60,000.

One of those to benefit was the Dyslexia Awareness Animation & Film Project for Young People, which was run by Swindon Arts.

According to Sue Carter, GWR FM's afternoon presenter and programme controller, this year too has all the ingredients of a bumper appeal.

She said: "The very first time I heard about the appeal was when someone told me it doesn't really feel like Christmas in Wiltshire until the GWR FM Christmas Appeal has happened.

"It really is a magical day."

The main item to go under the hammer will be a flash new Suzuki 1.5ltr V V T Ignis Sport car from Pebley Beach Suzuki.

Stacks of signed memorabilia from top artists such as Mis-Teeq, Atomic Kitten, Dido, Christine Aguilera and Liberty X are also expected to fetch good prices.
