AS shops become piled high in December, it's not just shoppers who are enticed into the town centre.
December is the police's busiest month for shoplifters and pickpockets, who know they can establish their own roaring trade because so many people will be out buying gifts, food and other festive items.
We fully back the police's stated intention to throw the book at these people.
We hope the courts also deal promptly with them, so Swindon shoppers can feel secure when they are in our town centre.
It's a good time to reiterate the simple ways to avoid being targeted. It seems obvious, but these are easily forgotten during a frenetic shopping trip.
Wrap your bag strap around your wrist so it can't be slipped off your shoulder, and try to avoid leaving expensive goods in your car, even if they are out of sight in the boot. Above all, be aware.
Swindon fortunately has a good reputation as a safe place to shop, and the town cannot afford to lose it. The misery and hassle that theft, whether of bought goods or of handbags and wallets, causes is immense.
As the town centre gets busier stress levels are already rising. Crime, and the fear of crime can only add to this. As December starts, here's to a safe Christmas.
