TOMMY MOONEY would love to extend his stay at the County Ground but the club's performance over the second half of the campaign will go a long way to deciding his future.

The 32-year-old striker admits the subject has come up for discussion and he hopes a positive end to the current season will make his decision a simple one.

A clause in Mooney's contract gives him the option to request a second year in Wiltshire.

Supporters would be unwise, though, to take anything for granted at this stage.

He is not going to make a decision on whether to trigger that option just yet but he will bust a gut to make sure he gives himself the best possible chance to remain a Town player.

Mooney said: "The issue has been mentioned but nothing more than that at this stage.

"I still have that hunger to win a medal and I want to do that with Swindon. It has never been about money. I've made that clear from day one.

"If things are going in the right way and I'm enjoying my football then I would love to stay."

Mooney knows he has a significant part to play himself, and he said: "There are an awful lot of people at this club who care passionately about seeing it succeed.

"We all have to analyse our individual contributions and see how we can become a more consistent threat as a team. I am no exception. We need to grow up a little bit, take responsibility and cut out the naivety.

"There are times this season where we have put in a wonderful 45 minutes and there have been spells in games where we have retained possession superbly.

"We need to make sure we find a good 90 minutes. And a side that gets promotion has three good games out of four. You can afford one off-day a month but no more."

Mooney's blank afternoon at Hartlepool extended his goalless run to eight matches and he will have to wait almost a fortnight for the chance to put matters right.

He said: "I wish we had a game tomorrow so I could try and end it. I've been honest and said it does concern me."

Chief executive Mark Devlin is a fully signed up member of the Mooney fan club and the prospect of securing the striker's services for another year is very appealing.

He said: "Young fans today need heroes, figures they can look up to. Tommy is a decent individual who commands respect.

"As for his future with the club, I think we as a club would be very keen to find a way to look forward."
