I am appealing on behalf of Heart Research, for runners to take part in the London Marathon 2004 who in doing so will help improve and save the lives of people across the country affected by heart disease.

Over the past 36 years we have witnessed considerable breakthroughs in the treatment of heart disease which have helped save the lives of many sufferers, young and old. Like three-year-old Beth Pallas, who in August underwent a life-saving heart transplant operation using a technique that was previously unsafe for use in children.

Thanks to heart research, the procedure was developed and now many children with congenital heart disease have benefited, having their lives transformed by surgery.

Having witnessed, in my time with the charity, the impact of heart disease and the tremendous benefits that research can bring, I would urge anybody with the heart for a challenge and a determination to save more lives to get in touch and join the 2004 London Marathon team.

We have a number of guaranteed places to offer those who haven't yet got their own place and are also inviting those who have their own place to use it to support research into heart disease.
