NOW that winter has put an end to evening use of Monkton Park in Chippenham, this is a good time to consider installing more walkway lighting along the riverside of this attractive park.
The absence of sensible lighting in this area from the Olympiad Sports Centre to the Millenium cycle bridge, means that a valuable town resource is partly blacked out for four or five months of the year. There are not many towns that have such a unique site close to a riverbank.
There is really no need for such beauty spots to go into virtual hibernation over the winter. Winters are warmer now and an evening stroll at night, along a well-lit riverbank is an appealing prospect. It is also an opportunity to introduce brighter, more user friendly lighting, to a park that is only partly lit by
depressing orange lights. However, as these lights are in place, it shouldn't be too difficult to complete the ring around the park.
If people are concerned about this lack of winter amenity, and would like Monkton Park to shine in the winter nights, now is the time to lobby local Councillors, Chippenham Town Council, and NWDC.
Better lighting would make the park safer, brighten up a under-used town beauty spot, and,I suspect, result in more community-tax-paying residents using, not Monkton Dark but Monkton Park.
