AN old pair of jeans landed Shane Smith in trouble with the police. Smith, of Waiblingen Way, Devizes, was arrested by police on suspicion of causing a breach of the peace when he and his partner were arguing.
When he was taken into custody at Melksham Police Station and searched a small amount of cannabis resin was found in the pocket of his trousers.
Smith, 33, was charged with possession of cannabis, a class B drug, to which he pleaded guilty when he
appeared at Kennet Magistrates Court in Devizes on November 25.
Smith told the court: "I was wearing a pair of jeans that I hadn't worn since last winter because I was due to do some decorating at a house. I didn't
realise I had the cannabis on me."
Smith said the drug was for his own personal use. He was given an 18-month community punishment order in July this year for assault and possession of class B drugs.
Smith told the magistrates he was seeking help from a drugs and alcohol service. The magistrates gave Smith a six-month conditional discharge and ordered the cannabis resin to be destroyed. They made no order for costs.
