THE Old Swan Yard in Devizes will have a Mediterranean look about it next summer after the Campanella family were given planning permission to put up awnings outside their restaurant and caf.
Councillors at Thursday's meeting of Kennet District Council's regulatory committee went against the recommendation of their planning officers and granted permission for the two separate green-and-white awnings which will extend over the seating outside the premises.
Officers considered that the awnings would be detrimental to the listed buildings in the conservation area.
But Coun Nigel Carter asked members to reconsider the matter. He said: "This is the longest-standing restaurant in town and the objections are largely of a technical nature.
"Kennet's conservation officer is not against this application and it has the approval of the freeholder of the property. There was much talk of the revamped Market Place having a piazza-style appearance. Here we have a genuine Italian restaurant, caf, bakery and delicatessen."
