A Victorian shop front in Malmesbury is set to be demolished despite objections from English Heritage.
North Wiltshire District Council's development control committee last week overturned the officers' recommendation to refuse the plans, arguing the shop front at 29 Abbey Row was not very attractive.
The shop is one of a pair of early 19th century listed houses, and the shop front was added in the mid-19th century.
Currently a wholefood shop, the owners were granted planning permission to convert the building into a home in March.
Malmesbury Town Council supported the plan and at the development control meeting Coun John Thomson said he was in favour of the changes.
"The shop front was grafted onto the building. The alterations would be an improvement to the street scene," he said.
The shop front will be taken off and replaced with two sash windows and a door, once details have been ironed out.
