Chippenham 24 Oakmedians 13

CHIPPENHAM made it seven wins on the trot after another excellent erformance in difficult conditions at Allington Field on Saturday.

Chippenham were the first to open the scoring after 13 minutes. A superb individual try from David Spiers. He virtually stole the ball from Darren McMillan, rolled beating four waiting Oakmedian players in the process, got behind the defence and sprinting 40 metres to score an unconverted try.

The Oakmedians' reply was to be awarded a penalty after Chippenham were caught with their hands in the ruck.

Spiers was then instrumental in the next try for the home side. Tying up the Oakmeadian defence released winger Darren McMillen who sprinted from the half-way line to score another unconverted try.

The Chippenham forwards showed some powerful play during the first half and this dominance resulted in prop Jim Pratt scoring at the back of an excellent driving maul. The conversion was kicked by Dan Reynolds and gave Chippenham a comfortable lead 17-3 going into the half-time break.

At the start of the second half, Oakmeadians came out strongly and using the pick and go at the rucks gave the Chippenham defence some work to do. This pressure resulted in Oakmeadians scoring in the corner. The conversion was missed.

Chippenham's fly-half Reynolds then chipped the ball over the top which was chased by Spiers and Grant Trewartha. Spiers got there first, gathered the ball well after a lucky bounce, released replacement centre Trewartha to score with the conversion added by Reynolds.

During the last minutes of the game, Oakmeadians scored their second try of the match but the points and the victory went to Chippenham. Their seventh win on the trot.

Coach John Rumble was pleased with the result and the performance of the team.

He said: "I felt our forwards played out of their skins against a well-organised powerful Oakmeadians pack. We've now won a run of seven games and are looking forward to meeting Wimborne at their ground next week.''

Chippenham 2nd 15 Whitehall 2nd 3

CHIPPENHAM'S second team visited Whitehall in very wet and windy conditions which made playing conditions difficult for both sides who tried to produce quality rugby.

Electing to play with the wind in the first half, the home side applied immediate pressure on the Chippenham defence which to their credit, held firm, conceding only one penalty in the half.

The reply came in the final minutes of the half when Chippenham managed to string together several phases of play, driving Whitehall back to their own try line where Dave Williams crossed from the back of a rolling maul.

In the second half, Chippenham put the home side under enormous pressure, but they struggled to convert the pressure into points. Mid-way through the half, another drive from the Chippenham pack allowed hooker John Angel to dive over the try line. Centre Paul Clifford added the conversion to give Chippenham a 12-3 lead. A late drop goal from fly-half Trevor Lloyd completed the scoring.

Chippenham 3rd 47 Stothert and Pitt 2nd 7

CHIPPNHAM began in a determined mood against a weakened Stothert side.

Their first try came after only five minutes. Dave Burrows collected a pass from Ceri Morris, ran through the waiting cover and scored under the posts. Morris converted.

Captain Ian Bannister finished off a move started by the forwards to go over, quickly followed by Ben Chamberlain. Morris converted one of the tries and added another three points from a penalty.

The pressure continued with Chris Davies going over to score and Morris again converting. There was one more score before half-time through Burrows.

The second half saw Chippenham relax and Stothert scored under the posts. A mistake allowed the Chippenham forwards to pressurise the defence and Micky Dyer went over for his first try of the season.

In the final minute Chippenham scored again when Chris Beacham touched down a ball kicked on by Chamberlain and Micky Wuantrough.
