Motorola has been announced as one of six winners at the sixth annual Investing in Excellence Awards, where BT recognised the best suppliers that have delivered world-class products and services.

BT said the winning companies have contributed to improved customer satisfaction as well as saving BT an estimated £50 million over three years, as a result of improved supply practices.

Motorola was the winner in the Innovation and Responsiveness category for transcending the frontier of technology and delivering innovation in creating BT Openzone.

Motorola was recognised for making sure that BT was the first to deliver public access to a wireless internet connection from over 2,000 wi-fi hotspots throughout the UK.

Meryl Bushell, chief procurement officer for BT Group, said: "Our suppliers are a key component of our success and the best ones are relentless in their quest to deliver the very best products and services to BT.

"The Investing in Excellence awards are highly regarded by the industry as a whole. In developing BT Openzone, Motorola designed, deployed and integrated a central data centre, created and authenticated billing systems, was responsible for installing equipment at the hot spots and established an operations centre from which Openzone is managed. Delivering on time and saving BT £8m, Motorola has demonstrated itself as an undisputed visionary in promoting growth areas for their team at BT."

Colin Bendall, director of European key accounts for Motorola, said: "Motorola has recently celebrated 75 years of innovation and we are excited to have won the award for innovation and responsiveness for the Wireless LAN work we've performed with BT."
