FESTIVE shoppers need to be Christmas Scrooges to prevent falling prey to debt, Trading Standards officers have warned.
Wiltshire County Council fears pressure to spend more money on presents for nearest and dearest means people risk splashing out more than they can afford.
Credit cards offering Christmas deals could also cost the customer more in the future, officers claim.
Steve Clover, county Trading Standards manager, said: "It is important to watch your finances at this time of the year."
Mr Clover said: "Credit cards and credit deals may seem a tempting option, but bear in mind you may well have to pay back far more than you actually spend because of high interest rates."
Anyone concerned about Christmas debt can contact the Trading Standards office on (01225) 713548.
