A BAN on drivers using mobile phones at the wheel has yet to yield the first fines in west Wiltshire.

Police are currently only issuing warnings and advice to drivers caught breaking the law instead of on the spot fines.

Despite this motorists have been buying hands-free kits in their droves leaving some stores with empty shelves.

A Wiltshire police spokesman said: "The full law will come into action at the end of January but we will not be lenient if the use of a mobile phone is a factor in an accident or reckless driving."

Carphone Warehouse in The Shires, Trowbridge, has sold out of some key lines.

Giles Patterson, manager at Carphone Warehouse, Trowbridge, said: "There has been a massive surge over the last three weeks in people panic-buying mobile phone holders and hands-free kits."
