CATs avenged an early season cup defeat at the hands of Corsham with a comfortable win over their local rivals in a Dorset and Wiltshire Division One encounter on Saturday.

The hosts started the match strongly and deserved an early seven points lead when centre Ben Duddridge cut through the Corsham defence to score under the posts, leaving an easy conversion for Danny Wells.

Further pressure from CATs gave Wells another two penalty kicks but, kicking against the wind, he was unable to convert either.

It was third time lucky, though, as he knocked the ball over from in front of the posts to give his side a 10-point lead at half time.

Corsham rarely threatened in the second half and a dropped pass by a Corsham centre saw Paul McQuillum kick through for winger, Matthew Glover, to gather and touch down under the posts. Wells added the conversion.

CATs continued to dominate and only determined tackling by Corsham stopped the hosts from adding to their score.

Coaches Mark Simmons and Tim Unwin were full of praise.

Simmons said: "It was a great win and a good performance. This team is really improving.

"Our aim is to go up to the next league and establish ourselves in the Southern League with Trowbridge and Westbury.

"The average age of our team is 23 and that is including two old boys, who will not be playing next season. The future is definitely bright."

CATs travel to North Dorset tomorrow, hopeful for the points that will help them move up from their current fourth position in the table.
