A HARD-HITTING poster campaign highlighting children suffering diseases caused by second- hand smoke has hit Trowbridge this week.
The Department of Health are issuing warnings to parents that smoking near children can increase the likelihood of cot death, asthma, breathing problems and ear disease.
A government survey also revealed that one third of all smokers in Wiltshire continue to light up in front of children despite health warnings.
Dr Gabriel Scally, regional director of public health, said: "This is a serious health issue and all of us need to ensure that children are not exposed to the poisons in second-hand smoke.
"Now is the time to take action to protect children."
The campaign will include 119 posters across the region, television, newspaper adverts and the distribution of children's bibs carrying the slogan 'If you smoke, I smoke'.
Health bosses are asking smokers to keep children's playing, sleeping and eating areas completely smoke free and to smoke outside wherever possible.
