SAMMY IGOE helped Town avenge their FA Cup defeat at the hands of Oxford United before turning his attention to a County Ground comeback against Plymouth Argyle.

The midfielder was included from the start as Town triumphed 1-0 against their bitter rivals in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Kassam Stadium yesterday.

Rory Fallon's first goal in Town colours separated the two teams, although there were no visiting supporters present to acclaim his strike nor Oxford fans to jeer him.

Igoe will discover on Tuesday whether his wrist injury has healed and if there has been sufficient improvement, he will be cleared to play using a special splint.

That being the case, Town boss Andy King has said Igoe will come into the frame for the visit of the high-flying Pilgrims next Saturday.

Igoe managed 45 minutes at a ghostly Kassam Stadium as Town restored some of the pride lost when the U's triumphed in altogether more glamorous circumstances 12 months ago.

He said: "Hopefully I'll get the news I want to hear on Tuesday and if the manager asks me if I want to be involved against Plymouth, I'll snap his arm off, no pun intended.

"The game with Oxford was a good test for the lads. It was pretty competitive and from a personal point of view, it was a step towards getting back my match fitness.

"I made a few frustrating mistakes and felt pretty tired when I came off but then it feels like an eternity since I last played."

King said: "It was good to see Sammy back out there and if his cast can come off next week, then he will certainly be involved against Plymouth in some capacity."

Oxford boss Atkins said: "We couldn't have played this on a Saturday because of the police bill involved. It was a good workout and useful for both clubs."
